Business Studies

Single Award AVCE

The Double Award Advanced VCE Business is a two year course which is equivalent to two A levels, whilst the Single Award is a two year course equivalent to one A level.

Are there any special requirements?
Yes it is important that you enjoy coursework as two thirds of the course is assessed in this way. If you preferred the coursework element of your GCSEs to the examination then you will enjoy this course and perform well. You do not need GCSE Business Studies to enrol as we assume no prior knowledge.

What will I be studying?
The Single Award consists of the following 6 units:

Unit 1:

Business at Work:
This Unit explores how businesses function and how they interact and compete with one another. Students produce an assignment based on a firm of their own choice.

Unit 2:

The Competitive Business Environment:
This Unit explores both the national and international environment in which businesses operate.

Unit 3

Marketing:
The Marketing Unit explores the influences behind consumer behaviour. Students design a marketing strategy for a firm of their choice, as part of the assessment for this Unit.

Unit 4:

Human Resources:
The Human Resources Unit explores recruitment and selection procedures, motivation techniques that firms may employ, training and development strategies and workforce planning.

Unit 5:

Finance:
This Unit examines how businesses manage their finances and the indicators that measure a firm's financial health.

Unit 6:

Introduction to management.

What skills will I need and be developing during the course?
Students extend their research skills and the ability to plan their work and meet set deadlines. IT skills are developed through the use of computer packages and the Internet. Communication is evident in all units as students produce reports and on occasion participate in group presentations. In addition, the financial units will develop basic numeracy skills.

How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed in a variety of methods; two thirds of the units are internally assessed through coursework that involves students producing individual projects. A third is externally assessed through case study examinations and timed assignments.

What career opportunities are there?

  • Many of the students completing this course chose to continue their study of business by pursuing degree and HND courses at universities and further education colleges. Likely degree/HNDs range from the more general Business Studies to Applied Management as well as more specialised options such as Human Resources and Marketing.
  • There are varied career options, including general management, marketing, personnel, finance and administration.
  • A number of students choose to go directly into employment gaining places on management training schemes or as accountancy trainees.
