Psychology

Over recent years, psychology has experienced a period of enormous growth, at A-Level, universities and in the world at large. This trend has been observed at Our Lady's, where the subject has grown in popularity over the last four years in which it has been available at the school, with now roughly half the sixth form currently enrolled on the course at either A2 or AS-level.

The term 'Psychology' literally means the 'study of the mind'. Psychologists are however interested in all aspects of human thought and behaviour, their feelings, and how they interact with one another, socially.

Psychology students at Our Lady's follow the AQA exam syllabus, specification A. Throughout both the AS and A2 course students develop knowledge of psychological theories and research and their relationship to social, cultural and contemporary issues, as well as developing key skills of interpretation, analysis and evaluation.

AS Psychology

Throughout the AS course students are provided with a very thorough introduction to the different areas of psychology such as cognition, development, social and individual differences, as well as learning how topical issues such as eating disorders, day care, eyewitness testimony and stress can be better understood and managed using psychological knowledge and methods.

A2 Psychology

At A2 level we focus on topics such as relationships, personality and social development and pro- and anti- social behaviour. A synoptic paper is also taken which enables students to have an understanding and appreciation of the breadth of theoretical and methodological approaches in psychology. Students are also required to complete one piece of coursework. This involves conducting their own psychological investigation into whatever area of psychology interests them most. Projects undertaken this year include investigations into the relationship between self esteem and exam success, and the accuracy of eyewitness testimony.
