Classical Studies

Classics has had a long pedigree at Our Lady's, going back to the days when Latin still appeared on the timetable.

Today it remains a GCSE option and covers some aspects of ancient Greek and Roman culture such as the Greek gods, life in Ancient Athens, and the destruction and discovery of Pompeii. Literature in translation provides an insight into the Greek outlook as students become acquainted with the epic poems of Homer, and the tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides. Study trips have proved very popular, and there have been excursions to Greece, taking in Olympia, Delphi and the theatre at Epidaurus, as well as, more recently, a trip to Pompeii in Italy.

At AS and A2 level, Classical Civilisation is ever popular, and students find many links between Classics and English, Art, RE and Philosophy. Some of the GCSE topics are studied at greater depth, and Roman Britain is also included. Progression to university can mean following a Classics degree on its own, or Classics combined with another subject. As a subject it's a 'classic'!
