Mathematics

The Mathematics department at Our Lady's is housed in 5 specialist subject rooms. Symbolically, these include one of the oldest rooms and two of the newest and brightest. On top of them are built the English rooms and above again, the art rooms.

The department aims to give the pupils confidence in the use of mathematics, resourcefulness in overcoming problems, and the ability to think clearly and logically. Most pupils enjoy Mathematics and experience success at all levels.

Extra activities include participation in National problem solving competitions, opportunities to attend Saturday morning master classes and problem solving sessions at Hackney High Wire. There are revision classes for key stages 3 and 4, booster classes for pupils who want them, Help clubs in the lunch hour and trips to hear lectures put on by the Gresham University. Future plans include the introduction of Maths Alive, a dynamic software package making use of interactive white boards to help with the presentation of lessons.

We have a very experienced team and make use of the Key Maths scheme up to year 11. At key stage 3, 80% of pupils attain level 5 or above, and at key stage 4, 60% of pupils gain a C grade or above. We have a long tradition of success at A level and Further Maths, and have recently had pupils graduating with Mathematics degrees from Cambridge, Imperial College, Kings College and Manchester.
