History Trip to the Western Front

Ypres and Somme

The pictures show Year 11 pupils in October visiting the battlefields Ypres and Somme, the bloodiest battlefields of the Western Front as part of their GCSE studies. It shows students fist and foremost having a good time learning through their enjoyment of the subject. The sites we visit allow pupils to experience first hand to experience what World War One was all about.

We visited the cell and firing post of soldiers shot for cowardice and desertion. In the Flanders Museum we are taken back through pictures, sound and 3D images to relive the lives of soldiers. As the pictures show we can walk the trench systems that survive and can only imagine what life was like under shell fire, awash with mud and living alongside lice and rats never knowing whether that day will be your last!

Students have an opportunity to lay a wreath on the Threpval Memorial on the Somme. On the memorial are the names of over thousands of soldiers with no known graves. Students who have visited that site and others come away very reflective, sad yes but also at peace and more aware of the horrors and sacrifice of war.
