Poetry Anthology
Foreword
Every year, the WORDS COUNT Competition is organised by the Bristol West of England Comenius centre, based at Bristol University, and is sponsored by Stanley Thornes Publishers. Pupils are invited to write a poem or a song in a foreign language.
Over the last past three years, a number of inspired OLC students have achieved significant recognition for their creative use of the language. Holidays, colours, the seasons, food, friendship and animals are among the most common topics. Some entries are highly original, using comparisons and alliterations with flair and humour. Many of the poems are attractively presented and illustrated, often enhanced by the use of IT.
Since 1999, the school has won several prizes in the WORDS COUNT competition, winning 1st, 2nd and Highly commended prizes for poems in French and Spanish. Quite an achievement, since about 200 UK schools take part in this yearly award, with over a thousand poems to be judged.
To celebrate European Year of Languages, the Languages Department of OLC has compiled this collection of the best entries. This unique anthology will surely inspire future contributions! The next competition will be launched shortly.
Keep writing, girls!
