Paris Student Conference
31st January - 2nd February
Our 3-day break to Paris to take part in a student conference on the European Union looked doomed to be cut to two days as we sat in the Waterloo terminal facing a four-hour delay. We finally arrived at our hotel at 10:30pm, tired and hungry, but nevertheless in high spirits. And undeterred, we took to the streets of Paris in search of food, ending up in a French Brasserie.
The next morning, not surprisingly, we awoke bleary eyed and slightly worse for wear. Braving a tube strike, we headed for the conference where we found ourselves with front row seats in an auditorium housing thousands. And after listening to various speakers, the best being the Millennium dome man 'Pierre Yves Gerbeau', Our Lady's girls got in on the action, voicing their questions in the open forum. All in all, the conference turned out to be great fun.
It would have been wrong though to end the trip there. We were in such a historic city, and just had to visit some of the local sites Paris had to offer. So, following the conference, we took a whistle stop tour of Paris lead by our trusty French guide (aka Mme Martinon), attempting to take in as much as we could; Notre Dame, the River Seine and of course the Eiffel tower. However, by the time we'd got halfway through our expedition, the sub zero temperatures had got to everyone and our feet were beginning to develop frostbite. We were glad to get back to the hotel where we warmed up before being let loose for a couple of hours by ourselves to eat out.
On the final day, those of us who could be dragged out of bed, headed to a local French market near the Sacré Coeur Basilica. But we were all soon reunited, and before we knew it, we were back in London. It had, with its numerous transport difficulties, been an eventful trip. But, together with the enthusiasm of the students, the positive attitude of the teachers and the beauty of the city itself, the visit had been a memorable experience and a successful outing for the school.
